Boris Johnson: I'm Not Running For Leadership

There are gasps as Tory MPs and journalists are left stunned by the former London mayor's revelation that he will not be standing

Boris Johnson has ruled himself out of the race to be the next Tory leader and Prime Minister saying, "that person cannot be me".

Mr Johnson, who was the bookies' favourite to succeed David Cameron and was expected to throw his hat into the ring, made the shock announcement after fellow Brexiteer Michael Gove put himself forward as a leadership contender.

His decision to bat for the Leave campaign was seen by many as a political gamble which, if successful, would have seen him replace his former Eton chum as Prime Minister.

In a news conference just moments before the midday deadline for nominations, Mr Johnson said the next Tory leader would have to unite the party and country.

Citing his own credentials, Mr Johnson said he was immensely proud of what his team had achieved in the capital at City Hall.

He said the UK's Brexit vote was a chance for the country's next leader to "restore Britain's standing as an independent sovereign" and "our moment to stand tall in the world".

But then he added: "My friends, you have waited for the punchline of this speech.

"Having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances in Parliament, I have concluded that person cannot be me."

There were audible gasps from Tory MPs and journalists in the room as he made the revelation.

Moments later, Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee of senior Tory backbench MPs, confirmed Mr Gove, Home Secretary Theresa May, former defence secretary Liam Fox, Work and Pensions Secretary Stephen Crabb and Andrea Leadsom as the official leadership contenders.

What a surprise.

Boris caused a sh*t storm and has now bowed out to let someone else pick up the pieces.

Personally, I hope this clown is excluded from any future cabinet positions.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

I totally agree Melisandre. In all honesty, there isn't one MP of any colour that I'd vote for at the minute.

My bet is that Theresa May will become the next PM (I wouldn't allow her to wash dirty dishes) and I have no idea what is going to happen to the Labour party. - Though I perversely hope Corbyn does win through, he's no leader.

Niether would I vote for any on both sides as for what Corbyn said today to a Jewish MP who stormed out seems he is the puppet and Diane Abbott is pulling the strings .

I know Rebbonk and it shows to this day as others have more or less said the same as me I have read in press public replies which I feel is nt a good thing for the Labour party when you are defending certain races against racisum but not others that live here they have a short memory that it was Rothchilds bank that loaned us the money to help fight ww2 and Jews are donators of Labour.

I wonder how many people realise the amount of business and banks the Rothchilds own .

I know I dont forget what Borris said at the start like others, when Cameroon came back and the EU refused Cameroons deal Borris said the only way to make the EU listen. Most of it was because the other Conservatives would nt listen to Goves and Borris new ways of thinking its been said.
