Osborne Warns Of Tax Hikes In 'Brexit Budget'

George Osborne will team up with his Labour predecessor Alistair Darling to claim leaving the EU would trigger an emergency "Brexit budget" with £30bn worth of tax hikes and spending cuts.

The attack on Leave by Mr Osborne and Mr Darling will be their second joint intervention during the referendum campaign and reflects the Tory high command's attempts to woo Labour voters.

In a move dismissed by opponents as yet another "Project Fear" panic measure, the Chancellor will claim that in order to plug a predicted £30bn "black hole" created by Brexit.

:sky_news:

I don't think Gideon need worry about that since the chances of his remaining chancellor after a vote for Brexit are practically nil. He'll be back folding towels at Harrods which is the only thing he has ever been any use for!

Perhaps Gidiot would like to tell us about the extra we'll be paying, if we stay, to cover Merkel's stupidity with immigration?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Coventry voters back Brexit by big majority during historic vote

Coventry has joined the rest of the country in voting to leave the EU.

The city polled 85,097 Leave votes and 67,967 for Remain in a turnout of 69 per cent at yesterday’s historic referendum.

All of Coventry and Warwickshire voted for Brexit - with the exception of Warwick.

North Warwickshire was the first of the region’s areas to declare with a decisive 67 per cent to 33 per cent in favour of Leave.

In Nuneaton and Bedworth 23,736 voted to Remain and 46,095 opted to Leave - the turnout was 74 per cent.

Meanwhile in Stratford-on-Avon 38,341 wanted to stay in the EU but they were pipped to the post by 40,817 Brexiteers. In Stratford the turnout was a huge 80 per cent.

In a political earthquake which sent shockwaves around the world, the referendum called by Mr Cameron produced an unexpected victory for Leave by a majority of 52 per cent to 48 per cent.

Ukip leader Nigel Farage declared June 23 “our independence day” and called for the Prime Minister to immediately stand down in response to voters’ rejection of his passionately-argued advice to stick in the EU.

Camoron's announced he's going... Corbyn's allegedly had a vote of no confidence tabled against him... The EU are saying they want us out sooner rather than later...

Been an interesting day so far.

I couldn't agree more.

We need a thorough purge through Westminster and 'the establishment' in general. Far too many have been sat there for far too long not having to earn their corn. Perhaps a wake-up call has been sounded?

Sisu's Ricoh Arena barrister leads Brexit challenge over referendum result

Image

The barrister representing Coventry City owners Sisu in the Ricoh Arena row is leading a challenge to the process of Britain leaving the European Union.

Rhodri Thompson QC, who has represented Sisu in the long-running legal battle with Coventry City Council, is part of a legal team assembled to challenge the Brexit process.

Mr Thompson has been retained by law firm Mishcon de Reya, also used by Sisu, to act on behalf of an anonymous group of clients and launch a pre-emptive legal strike against the UK government following the EU referendum result.

The law firm wants to ensure Article 50, the starting point for the UK leaving the EU, is not enacted by the Prime Minister without a vote in the House of Commons.

Mr Thompson will be working alongside other senior legal figures including Baron David Pannick QC, Tom Hickman and Anneli Howard.

The law firm’s challenge is based on the ambiguous wording of Article 50, which reads: “Any member state may decide to withdraw from the Union in accordance with its own constitutional requirements.”

The legal battle is likely to be based on the fact that a referendum is advisory and cannot be used to undermine parliamentary law.

Mishcon de Reya will argue the decision to trigger Article 50 should rest with MPs as the representatives of the people under the UK constitution.

Kasra Nouroozi, partner at Mishcon de Reya, said: “We must ensure that the government follows the correct process to have legal certainty and protect the UK constitution and the sovereignty of parliament in these unprecedented circumstances.

“The result of the referendum is not in doubt, but we need a process that follows UK law to enact it. The outcome of the referendum itself is not legally binding and for the current or future Prime Minister to invoke Article 50 without the approval of parliament is unlawful.

“We must make sure this is done properly for the benefit of all UK citizens. Article 50 simply cannot be invoked without a full debate and vote in parliament.

“Everyone in Britain needs the government to apply the correct constitutional process and allow parliament to fulfil its democratic duty which is to take into account the results of the referendum along with other factors and make the ultimate decision.”

But government lawyers are adamant the two-year process of negotiating the UK’s withdrawal from the EU can be triggered by the Prime Minister using prerogative powers and without a vote in parliament.

Cabinet minister Oliver Letwin, who is heading a Whitehall Brexit Unit to prepare the way for negotiations, anticipated the issue would have to be ironed out in court.

He told a House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee: “I am advised that the government lawyers’ view is that it clearly is a prerogative power. No doubt that will be heard in court.”
