Drivers and bus services diverted after flooding at the junction of White Street, Primrose Hill and Cox Street

Motorists and bus services had to be diverted last night after road subsidence brought traffic chaos to a busy Coventry city centre route.

A crossroads just off junction three of the ring road was closed off after the mysterious appearance of rubble and mud.

White Street at the junction of Primrose Hill and Cox Street was closed by police around rush hour, with only pedestrian access around the closure.

The cordon was still in place this morning.

Coventry bus routes 16, 16A and 21 were all been diverted.

It later emerged that a collapsed sewer further along the road had caused the problems.

A spokesperson for Severn Trent Water said: “We were called out on Tuesday evening to reports of flooding at the junction of Primrose Hill and Cox Street in Coventry. We went out to investigate and found that the flooding was due to a collapsed sewer.

“In order to keep everyone safe we had to close the road and we’d like to apologise to anyone affected.

"We’re now working closely with the local council to schedule the repairs and get everything back to normal as quickly as possible.”

Coventry City Council were unable to say when the cordon would be lifted.

Collapsed sewer to cause traffic problems around Coventry city centre junction for another week

Traffic problems around a busy Coventry city centre route are set to continue after a collapsed sewer caused tailbacks this week.

A crossroads just off junction three of the ring road was closed off after the mysterious appearance of rubble and mud on Tuesday evening.

Swanswell Street was opened this morning but work is set to continue at the junction with Cox Street and Primrose Hill for another week.

A Severn Trent spokesman said: “We now believe the collapse is more extensive than we first believed and that means it’s likely to take at least a week to fully repair.

“Our intention now is to work through daylight hours until everything’s back to normal and we’ve continued to keep everyone on Primrose Hill Street fully informed as to what needs to be done.

“We’d like to apologise to everyone who’s been affected and recognise how disruptive work like this can be but it’s also very necessary.”

The emergency road works are not expected to hamper this weekend’s Motofest.
