The young mother was walking through the underpass in Spon Street when a man tried to snatch her handbag.

He yanked the bag’s shoulder strap pulling her over as she held her 15-month-old son in her arms.

Her little boy was unhurt while she suffered cuts and bruises.

West Midlands Police has released an image of a man they would like to speak to about the attack, which happened just before 4pm on March 13.

Cops are also increasing their presence in the area to reassure people.

Det Con James Clarke, who is investigating the attack, said: “This is a very serious incident, luckily neither mother nor son were badly injured but the outcome could easily have been far worse.

“Clearly that doesn’t absolve it from being a terrifying attack on the victim and we are working hard to ensure that we get the person responsible. We will be increasing our presence in the area to reassure the public.

“We have trawled CCTV cameras in the area and have identified a man we’d like to speak to about the attack; the image is grainy but we’re hoping someone might recognise him or suspect who it is and contact us.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Det Con Jim Clarke at Willenhall police station on 101 or email contactus@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Sadly, these days subways are ideal trapping places for muggers and worse. - I hope he gets caught, and quick.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Young mum mugged in Coventry subway while holding baby speaks of her ordeal

A young mum mugged in a Coventry subway as she cradled her baby says she is now too scared to go out alone.

Hayley Sykes spoke out after her terrifying ordeal was reported in the Coventry Telegraph.

The 19-year-old was on her way home with her 15-month-old son when she saw a man walking towards them in the subway in Spon Street on March 13.

Hayley said: “I was just getting my son into a routine so I picked him up out of the pushchair and had him in my arms while I pushed the pushchair.

“As I walked down the hill, I was coming round the bend of the slope when I saw a man that looked like he changed direction.

“It looked like he was going towards the steps but he saw me and it was as if he purposely changed direction. It was then that I had a slight inkling of what was going to happen.

“I was struggling with everything so I phoned my brother to come and help me, so I felt better knowing that he was going to be there within minutes.”

It was then that the mugger tried to grab her bag.

In the struggle, Hayley suffered cuts and bruises to her arms and elbows as she fell to the floor.

Hayley said: “I had my hands on the straps but as he grabbed my bag and pulled it, I went with it.

“Although I still kept a fair grip, I was never letting my son go, my main concern was to keep him safe.

“As I struggled with the mugger, all he managed to do was to pull a pair of tracksuit bottoms out, everything else just flew out of the bag.”

Hayley shouted out and was helped by a couple passing by.

She said: “The gentleman phoned the police, while the woman held my son for me while I steadied myself.

“I didn’t get their names to thank them, but I am so grateful for their help.

“Luckily my brother was just a few seconds behind them, so he went to go after the man who mugged me, but he was nowhere to be seen.

“I’m now scared to go out on my own. For someone who has walked the same route all their life, they shouldn’t have to take their parents or brother with them just to feel safe.

“I want to be able to take my son out on my own into town, but it has shaken me up so much.

“I felt sick and so shaky, didn’t know how to respond to it. I want other people to be aware of who is out there, if it happened to me in broad daylight it can happen to anyone at any time of day.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Det Con Jim Clarke at Willenhall police station on 101 or email contactus@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
