Figures released from the Financial Ombudsman have revealed the most complained about businesses in the country last year - and Coventry Building Society is almost squeaky clean.

The company - which was founded in 1884 as the Coventry Permanent Economic Building Society - saw just five per cent of complaints against it upheld between July and December 2015.

Coventry Building Society received 146 complaints from members of the public, with 106 of those attributed to PPI.

On the other end of the scale, Bank of Scotland received 22,000 complaints, while a further 21,304 complained about the parent bank, Lloyds.

Three quarters of complaints regarding Lloyds were upheld.

Barclays, HSBC, NatWest, credit card firm MBNA, RBS, Santander and Capital One all received at least 5,000 complaints or more.

Customers across the country, including Coventry and Warwickshire, made 6 per cent less complaints during the second half of the year than the first six months of 2015.

The Financial Ombudsman took on 164,347 new complaints - and around half of these were about mis-sold payment protection insurance.

Chief ombudsman Caroline Wayman said: “The signs are that complaints are now broadly levelling off as we move onto a more even keel in the coming year.

“Complaints about PPI still continue to make up over half of our workload.

“During 2015, PPI complaints finally began to approach stable levels - but we’re still seeing the volume of cases at a much higher level than many people expected.”

Before taking a complaint to the Ombudsman, you are encouraged to complain directly to the firm concerned.

If the firm doesn’t reply within 8 weeks, you can contact the Ombudsman instead and make a complaint.
