Tesco has confirmed it will end its 24-hour opening policy at dozens of stores - including one in Coventry.

The supermarket giant began its around-the-clock trading back in 1996, but has moved to limit the opening hours of more than 70 stores this week.

It is understood that 400 jobs will be affected nationally, though the company has not said if this means job losses.

Tesco will end 24-hour opening at the Coventry Walsgrave Superstore.

Tony Hoggett, Tesco's retail director, said: “We’re always thinking about how to serve our customers better in each of our stores and with the growth of online grocery shopping, these stores saw very few customers during the night.

“It makes much more sense for colleagues at those stores to focus on replenishing the shelves instead and making sure they’re fully stocked when they open their doors at 6am.

“We’ll continue to make changes in store in ways that will make shopping at Tesco a better experience for our customers, at the times they want to shop.”

Other nearby stores affected include those in Solihull and Hinckley.

Coventry Tesco supermarket workers set to lose hundreds of pounds in wages

Workers in Tesco supermarkets across Coventry and Warwickshire could lose hundreds of pounds in wages thanks to shifts in their contracts, it has been revealed.

Staff are set to be briefed this week over changes to their contracts which will see overtime, weekend and night shift rates slashed, according to the Sunday Mirror.

It is estimated more than 40,000 staff - including workers in Coventry and Warwickshire - are set to go home with less in their pay packet.

Tesco, Britain’s biggest supermarket, has been locked in talks with the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers about the new deal.

It is thought staff working Sundays and Bank Holidays will have double time pay slashed to time-and-a-half.

Furthermore, pay packet boosts to those working between 10pm and 6am will now only receive extra cash from midnight.

Overtime previously paid at time-and-a-half or double time, meanwhile, will now be at the normal single rate.

A company spokesman said: “We have reached a positive agreement on a two-year pay and benefits package for store colleagues, which is one of the most competitive in the supermarket industry and is good news for the large majority.

“We will announce details once we have spoken to colleagues about the changes.

“Any colleagues out of pocket will be given advance notice and earnings will be protected for up to two years.”

The move comes just days after Tesco, in Walsgrave, Coventry, announced it was ceasing 24-hour trading.
