The 30-year-old full-time mum had some shaky hands during the iced buns signature challenge, but managed to overcome them to wow judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, before also coming top in the mille-feuille technical challenge.

She rounded off a successful weekend in the tent with a classic three-tiered lemon drizzle cake in the showstopper round.

Both Tamal and Ian experienced difficult moments throughout the final three challenges, as Tamal had trouble with his timings and Ian forgot to add ingredients such as sugar and orange to his bakes.

Nadiya - who won Star Baker three times and was voted Digital Spy readers' pick for the winner - joked: "I went into the tent as the smallest baker at 4' 11" but I walked out feeling a giant - almost as tall as my fellow baker, 6 footer Mat Riley!"

Meanwhile, Mary said she is "really proud" of Nadiya, adding: "Over the weeks she has grown in confidence. She came into the tent for the final and was nervous but she had the look that said she can do it.

"The finished result had to wow us and Nadiya's showstopper was stunning. Sheer perfection, and I have enjoyed every minute."

Paul added: "All three bakers pushed the boat out for the final, but it's all about keeping calm and being consistent throughout.

"Nadiya has brought something special to the Bake Off. Her ideas, flair, her emotions and her passion were all in her bakes: she just nailed the whole final. That was the best-tasting final we have ever had."
