Forecourt war heats up as supermarkets plan weekend price cut
The forecourt war continues to wage on this week with the majority of supermarkets selling diesel for the same price.
Morrisons and Asda continue to fight for the cheapest fuel with prices dropping by 0.2p since last week.
For the first time since 2001 the price of diesel has fallen to the same amount as petrol.
Retailers have been able to cut the cost of diesel due to cheaper wholesale prices and falling demand.
On Saturday, Tesco will cut the cost of their diesel by 2p per litre and the price of unleaded petrol will drop by 1p at all of its 500 filling stations across the country.
It is reported Sainsburys and Asda will follow suit.
Asda has said motorists will pay no more than 108.7p per litre of diesel and 111.7p on unleaded petrol at its pumps as part of its price cap.
Further price cuts could be on the cards given that oil recently dipped below 50 dollars a barrel.
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams suggested motorists might even see a return of £1-a-litre diesel.
He said: “July was a bumper month for diesel vehicle drivers with the average price falling by 5p a litre, saving £3 on a fill-up,” he said.
“Now August is off to a flying start with another substantial cut which will help shave another couple of pounds off a tank of diesel, just as millions of people head off on holiday by car.
“With oil prices just under the 50 dollars a barrel mark, there’s every chance even more cuts are just around the corner. And, if oil stays low and wholesale diesel remains abundant, we could even have a chance of seeing £1 a litre diesel.”
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams suggested motorists might even see a return of £1-a-litre diesel.
Diesel price war steps up as Morrisons announces another cut to pump prices
A diesel price war will intensify tomorrow when Morrisons cuts pump prices by another 4p a litre.
The news is a further boost for families heading off on their summer holidays.
Morrisons said the cut would bring down the cost of diesel to £1.08 per litre at its 336 forecourts - the lowest price anywhere in Britain - and widen the price gap with petrol to 5p.
The cut - the supermarket’s third cut in a month - has sparked fresh speculation that diesel prices will soon hit £1 per litre.
It comes only two days after Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda slashed the cost of diesel by 2p per litre.
Morrisons services director Jamie Winter said: “The latest price cuts mean that diesel will be 5p a litre cheaper than unleaded and at this rate it is possible that diesel prices could break below £1 per litre landmark.”
Diesel prices last stood at £1 per litre in March 2009 when crude oil cost around 45 dollars a barrel. Today the oil price stands at just under 49 dollars a barrel.
Price of diesel is beginning to climb again while petrol falls to around £1.04 per litre
The price of fuel is still in flux with the cost of diesel slowly increasing again.
Supermarkets were previously engaged in a forecourt war with Morrisons and Asda battling to drive the price of diesel to around £1 per litre.
For the first time since 2001 the price of diesel fell to the same amount as petrol due to cheaper wholesale prices and falling demand.
Now the price of diesel is beginning to climb again while petrol falls to around £1.04 per litre.

Petrol plummets to its lowest price in SIX years
Christmas has come early for motorists as fuel plummets to its lowest price in six years.
It’s thought that petrol could drop below £1-a-litre as the cost of oil remains at around $45 per barrel.
On average the cost of a litre of petrol on the forecourts could drop by 2p as the supermarkets battle it out for the cheapest fuel.
AA President Edmund King told motorists that this would be a “good start” to the festive season and that motorists should take advantage of the cheap prices.
