Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was shot in the head in Coventry yesterday evening.

The 21-year-old was a front seat passenger in a black Peugeot 206, travelling along Mercer Avenue when he was shot at around 5.50pm.

West Midlands Police have confirmed that the man is is currently in a critical condition in hospital with a serious head injury.

They added that Mercer Avenue is currently closed to allow them to carry out investigations.

Detective Sergeant Michelle Kiedron said: "We are at the very early stages of an investigation but from we understand so far, the car was driving towards the Stoke area when the man received his injury.

"At this time, this is not thought to be a random attack and we believe the victim may know who is responsible but - due to his condition − he is clearly not in a position to tell us.

"This shooting happened in broad daylight - someone must have witnessed it and can give us a description of whoever is behind it."

Anyone with any information is being asked to call West Midlands Police on 101.

Man charged with Coventry shooting

A man has appeared in court accused of shooting another man in the head in an attack in Coventry two months ago.

A 21-year-old victim remains in hospital, police said, suffering from a serious head injury.

He was shot while travelling in the passenger seat of a car on Mercer Avenue on 10 April.

Mohammed Ali Khan, 21, of no fixed address, appeared before magistrates in Coventry on Thursday charged with attempted murder.

He also faces charges of possessing a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life and a separate, fourth charge of possession of a firearm.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Coventry Crown Court on 1 July.
