Poldark debuts with 6.9m on BBC One on Sunday night

BBC One's Poldark began with strong ratings, according to overnight figures for Sunday (March 8).

Aidan Turner's new period drama was watched by 6.95m (29%) at 9pm, attracting more than double the viewers of ITV's Mr Selfridge.

Earlier in the evening, Countryfile interested 6.55m (29.7%) at 7pm, while Call the Midwife's fourth series drew to a close with 8.67m (32.8%).

BBC Two's The Fifteen Billion Pound Railway continued with 1.21m (5.5%) at 7pm, before Top Gear entertained 5.12m (19.4%) at 8pm, and Let's Play Darts For Comic Relief gathered 2.33m (9.9%) at 9pm.

Over on ITV, Off Their Rockers gathered 3.24m (14.1%) at 7.30pm (120k/0.4% on +1), while All Star Family Fortunes continued with 3.02m (11.4%) at 8pm (198k/0.8%). The latest episode of Mr Selfridge dipped slightly to 3.24m (13.5%) at 9pm (422k/2.8%).

Channel 4's coverage of Crufts 2015 averaged 1.64m (6.8%) between 7pm and 9pm (186k/0.7%), while Indian Summers dropped to 1.04m (4.3%) for its latest episode at 9pm (235k/1.5%).

Channel 5's showing of Hitch was watched by 692k (2.9%) at 7pm (39k/0.2%), but 21 Jump Street proved more popular with 1.13m (6%) at 9pm (79k/0.7%).
