A huge one-night-only nightclub for up to 5,000 revellers will be created – on part of Coventry’s RING ROAD!

In what will be yet another world first for Coventry Motofest, the brand new Greyfriars Green road tunnel will be renamed The Tunnel Club as it becomes a temporary nightspot on the Saturday night of the three-day festival.

Organisers have already announced that the 2015 festival, which will run from May 29-31, will host official time trials on the Coventry Ring Road – the first time that road racing has been allowed in the UK since a change in the law.

And now the new Greyfriars Green tunnel – built as part of the £59million Friargate development – will be shut at 5pm on Saturday May 30 for its transformation into a nightclub with a difference.

Workers will take just four hours to transform the tunnel, which will then reopen as a club with a host of top DJs until 1am.

Top house DJ Justin Wilkes will take to the decks as the night’s headline act, having hosted a regular weekday morning show on Kiss FM and club nights for legendary brands including Ministry of Sound, Miss Moneypenny’s, Gatecrasher, Eden and Sundissential.

He will be joined on the night by DJs Scottie D, Pic n Mix and Mr XS from Point Blank FM, the UK’s longest running house and dance music radio station, and Coventry DJ Jason Fox who will get the party started by playing the opening slot on the night.

Tickets for The Tunnel Club night are available now from http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk and http://www.coventrymotofest.com with an early bird price of £10 for the first 500 tickets sold.

After the discount offer ends, tickets will be priced at £15 online or £20 on the night.

Carters bar owner slams Ring Road tunnel nightclub plan

Image

A bar owner has branded plans to turn part of Coventry Ring Road in to a temporary nightclub as a “kick in the teeth” for the city’s businesses.

Kevin McCloskey, who runs Carters Sports Bar and Grill at the Skydome, believes that the council’s decision to team up with organisers of Coventry Motofest to create a nightclub for 5,000 revellers will steal custom away from the city’s other bars and clubs.

The one-night-only club will be housed in the brand new Greyfriars Green road tunnel, which will be renamed The Tunnel Club, on the Saturday night of the three-day Motofest festival.

The tunnel – built as part of the £59million Friargate development – will be shut at 5pm on Saturday May 30 for its transformation into a nightclub from 9pm to 1am.

Kevin said: “We’ve all got to take this on the chin as they say Motofest will be a massive attraction and then they go and close the ring road for a night and create a nightclub.

“This is a kick in the teeth for business owners like myself who have put a lot of money in to our buildings.

“We spend awful amounts of money through business rates and monthly bills and basically get nothing for it in my eyes. These sorts of events are ones that everyone should be enjoying and then they close the road and also set up a nightclub themselves.

“It is a massive bridge and who knows how many will be there on the night. Then when they close the doors at 1am, we could have a lot of revellers turning up on our doorstep who have been there all night and if there’s any trouble it will be us having to talk to the authorities, not the council.”

I think Mr. McCloskey has a point.

The council need to remember that they (and the city as a whole) need these businesses all year round. If they destroy any profits/goodwill by ill- conceived, ill-thought through, one-off actions, ultimately we all suffer.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Ring-road club night cancelled out of respect for Daniel Kirkwood

Plans to transform part of Coventry ring-road into a nightclub have been cancelled out of respect for a city teenager who died during a night out.

The Greyfriars Green tunnel was set to be transformed into a dance club on Saturday, May 30, during the three-day Coventry Motofest.

However organisers today announced that in the wake of the death of Daniel Kirkwood outside Society Nightclub on Sunday, March 15, the ring-road plans would now not go ahead.

James Noble, Motofest 2015 festival director, said: “It is with great regret that we have decided to postpone the Tunnel Club event for 12 months as a mark of respect to the family of Daniel Kirkwood.

“We have been in consultation with Coventry City Council and the police and we have decided that it would not be appropriate to stage such a large scale dance event with an early hours licence, given recent events.”

Mr Noble added: “We would also like to extend our condolences to Daniel’s family at this most difficult time.

“The emotions in the city are still very raw at the moment around his tragic death and we don’t consider it right to be putting on a dance event, given what’s taken place.”

While plans for the ring road tunnel nightclub have been placed on hold this year, Mr Noble reassured motoring fans that the rest of the festival would continue as planned.

He said: “The rest of the Motofest 2015 festival will proceed as planned with the intention as always of ensuring the three days are a celebration of Coventry’s internationally renowned motoring heritage.”

The Tunnel Club evening was set to begin at 5pm when the ring road was closed.

The night was set to attract top DJ acts such as Justin Wilkes of Kiss Fm.

The announcement of the ground-breaking event divided opinion.

More than 1,000 tickets had been sold in the first few days after plans for the Tunnel Club were revealed.

Anyone who has already purchased tickets for the event will receive a full refund.

So they realised it was a crap idea and used this poor kids death as an excuse to cancel!
