Blaze crash was caused by banned driver
A disqualified driver has been jailed for causing a crash which resulted in the death of a woman when her car burst into flames.
Nicky Gosal was speeding in a Mercedes SLK on Browns Lane, Coventry in December when he hit Georgina Johnson's Smart Car.
Gosal fled the scene and told officers his car had been stolen, police said.
He was jailed for eight years at Warwick Crown Court on Monday.
He was also disqualified from driving for 10 years.
The 27-year-old, of Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and admitted causing death while banned.
He was found not guilty of taking a vehicle without consent which subsequently caused the death of a person.
Ms Johnson was killed instantly as a result of the collision, which happened at about 07:30 GMT on 19 December, police said.
The 44-year-old's car was completely destroyed in a blaze.
PC Karl Davies, senior investigating officer, said her family's victim impact statements clearly moved some jurors to tears.
He said: "We are pleased with the sentence, which will give a message to all illegal drivers and dangerous drivers to adhere to the rules of the road and hopefully prevent another family being put through such a difficult time.
"Georgina Johnson's family have listened to difficult evidence, and this chapter of their lives can now be closed with Nicky Gosal being sent to prison."
