Joyless vandals have tried to spoil the Christmas spirit in Bedworth by causing more than £1,000 worth of damage to the town’s festive lights.

They targeted part of the council-erected display along Congreve Walk last Wednesday night - less than a week after the official switch-on ceremony, performed by mayor Brian Hawkes.

Fellow councillor Ian Lloyd, who is the cabinet member responsible for arts and leisure said: “I’m saddened that this act of mindless stupidity has dented the festivities in Bedworth.

But the council will repair, replace and reinstate the damaged lights as soon as possible in order for the Christmas cheer to return to the town centre.”
