Binley Woods Neighbourhood Project’s annual Christmas charity event raised a record £540 to help repair a severely damaged car park at the village hall.

The money was raised through a craft fair held by the Project and has been donated to the Village Hall Management Committee. The village hall has been re-decorated, leaving the car park the most expensive item to improve, costing in the region of £40-50,000.

Chair Janet Outhwaite said: “The amount raised at the craft fair is a record. It is incredible; we have never broken through £500 at a coffee morning before.”

Chair of the village hall management committee, Barbara Wilson, said: “The car park is quite dangerous for people walking across it, particularly those with walking sticks and the infirm. The holes are difficult to see in the dark where lack of lighting adds to the problem.”

Two lights are required to light the area sufficiently.

Local resident Sheila Webb presented the cheque. Sheila, who was born in the Binley Woods 79 years ago and has always lived in the village serving as the lollipop lady for 25 years, raised a personal £70 knitting children’s and ladies clothes and gloves.

Fundraising towards the car-park started in July and has raised £2,000 so far. The village hall is in full use with activities on most days and evenings.
