The collision happened outside the Co-op store in Remembrance Road, Willenhall , at about 11am.

The victim, a woman who was in her 70s, had been struck by a double-decker near a zebra crossing.

Paramedics tried to save her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “The pedestrian, a woman, had sustained serious injuries.

“Sadly ambulance staff were unable to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The driver of the bus, a man, was assessed but was uninjured.”

Remembrance Road remains closed between Mary Slessor Street and Robin Hood Road while police investigate what happened.

Sgt Neil Higgins, from the collision investigation unit (CIU), said: “Emergency services attended but despite their best efforts, the woman unfortunately died at the scene.

“I am asking for anyone who was in the area and who may have seen the collision to call the CIU at Perry Barr on 101.”

West Midlands Police have appointed a family liaison officer to help the victim’s family.

The collision involved a blue number 21 bus.

A statement from National Express Coventry said: “We can confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in a tragic incident on Remembrance Road on Monday morning.

“Our sympathies are with the family of the lady involved at this difficult time.

“We will work closely with the authorities on their investigation in to this incident.”
