I was thinking of changing my internet provider, I'm with Virgin at present and finding them a tad expensive now. Can anyone recommend a good reasonable provider? I was thinking of staying British if possible, if I can still use the name British these days.

I'm with talktalk costs me about £13/month unlimited. To be completely fair, I've not had a lot of problems with them at all.

If you're on Virgin cable at present you're very unlikely to find another cable operator in the same area.

That aside and assuming you don't need BT Sport then Plusnet - the cut-price division of BT - is about the cheapest compromise between performance, reliability and customer service.
