Frost was reported in some counties today and Northern Ireland recorded its lowest August temperature EVER.

The appalling weather means many holidaymakers will head home early.

And tens of thousands still abroad are nervously watching the situation on the Icelandic volcano which could erupt at anytime - potentially throwing flight schedules into chaos.

Government forecasters issued a warning for the South for impact to outdoor activities and holiday traffic delays.

The Met Office forecast 16C highs for London tomorrow - 7C below normal and set to break the record for the coldest August Bank Holiday ever recorded.

The coldest previous August Bank Holiday maximum temperature at London Heathrow is 18C, measured most recently in 2011.

Britain is currently colder than Kemi, on the borders of Finnish Lapland.

Traffic snarl-ups are adding to the gloom on coastal routes including the M55 to Blackpool, the A23 to Brighton the, A31i n Dorset and the A30 to Cornwall.
