Half a dozen trees were vandalised in Coventry’s War Memorial Park in just a few days.
Some of the ash saplings, located near to the golf course, were snapped in half by vandals on Friday. The others had been attacked in a similar fashion just days before.
The trees had been planted at the site to discover if similar varieties could grow in the area and were due to be removed.
A spokesman for Coventry City Council said: “We believe the trees were vandalised. They were all Ash trees that had been planted as a trial to see if they could be transplanted from another site.
“However, the decision had already been taken to replace these trees before they were vandalised with non-Ash varieties as they had not taken well to the land.”
Officials responsible for maintaining the park also suggested that, as Ash branches are incredibly tough, the fact they had been snapped in half probably indicated the trees were already dead when they were vandalised.
