Urgent appeal for help from Nuneaton cat charity...

A cat charity is appealing for help from animal lovers after becoming overrun with moggies.

Cats in Need, which covers the Nuneaton and Hinckley area, is urging people who would like a new furry friend to adopt one, rather than going down the usual route of buying one.

This comes after the charity, which is run by volunteers who take the animals into their own homes, now has between 40 and 50 cats and are being forced to turn animals away.

Jane Grundy, fostering co-ordinator of Cats in Need, said: “We’re currently experiencing the usual summer slump in homing, and alongside that we’re receiving two to three calls a day about cats needing help.

“Most of the cats we take in are strays, but others are brought to us because their owners can’t afford them any more, they are moving between rented accommodation where they can’t have pets or they have become too old to look after them.

“We currently have around 16 cats on our waiting list, and that’s not counting all of the calls we’ve had about cats needing help immediately which we couldn’t help.”

Miss Grundy is now urging people to think about re-homing an animal.

“People only seem to think about kittens when they are getting a cat. Although we do get kittens, people should consider re-homing an older cat. They’re usually calmer, settled and are also generally already litter trained,” she said.

“People are often discouraged by older cats because of their age, but some people don’t realise that an eight-year-old cat isn’t that old, and they can often live until their late teens.”
