Plans to build 143 new homes off Foleshill Road are set to go ahead.

The former council depot, empty since 2002, is the subject of bids by various housing groups.

Councillors are set to authorise the sale to Barratts before work starts early next year.

The site is heavily contaminated and overlooks Electric Wharf and Draper's Fields, and many of the homes will have canal-side frontages.

The majority will be flats but there are also plans for some six-bedroom properties, as well as 35 affordable three-to-six bedroom homes.

Outline planning permission was approved back in December.

More than 60 interested parties made contact and three bids have been considered by the council.

One saw proposals for a supermarket, while another were for 115 houses, but it was Barratts' bid which was favoured by council chiefs.

Planning officers have recommended councillors give the bid the green light ahead of a hearing on Tuesday.

Business cabinet member Coun Lynnette Kelly said: “I’m really excited that the plans for this site as they will improve a key route into the city and provide the type of quality housing that Coventry families want and need."
