Inquest rules death of scaffolder at Rugby cement plant was accidental

An inquest jury has ruled that the death of a scaffolder at a Warwickshire cement plant was accidental.

John Altoft, 29, suffered a fatal head injury while working at the Cemex plant, in Lawford Road, Rugby, on January 18 last year.

Mr Altoft, from Scunthorpe, had been erecting scaffolding inside a chamber when he was struck by waste material.

At the end of a four-day inquest at Coventry Crown Court, a jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

Speaking afterwards, Cemex spokesman Ian Southcott said: “The tragic death of John Altoft was a devastating event for his family, friends, colleagues and all those employees and contractors working at the Rugby cement plant.

“The company has worked closely with the authorities during the intervening period and this week’s inquest has been part of the process of trying to understand how this tragic event occurred.

“We will now reflect upon the verdict of the jury.

“Our thoughts above all remain very much with John’s family and friends.”
