Eagle-eyed Question Time viewers were left wondering why a city man spent the entire show pulling a face like a pigeon.

The serious political debate, filmed at Coventry's Ricoh Arena yesterday (Thursday), featured guests including government minister Jo Swinson and Aussie academic Germaine Greer.

But while fellow audience members listened intently to debates ranging from the EU to the NHS, Cheylesmore dad Neil Sayer dedicated his evening to pulling a pigeon face.

The father-of-two decided to lighten up the show after being egged on by his twitter followers.

The 39-year-old dedicated his performance to twitter user @PigeonJon - who tweets about life as a pigeon - and has now bagged himself dozens of new followers.

Neil, who tweets through @NeilSayer1, told the Observer: "It was just a bit of fun really and I wanted to lighten up a serious debate.

"I thought I might be the first ever audience member to be thrown out of Question Time.

"There was a 30-minute warm up and I thought I better pull faces so they think that's how I am.

"But I ended up pulling the face for a good two hours. My face really ached."

Twitters users, holding their own debate via the hashtag #BBCQT, quickly spotted Neil's antics when the camera turned to the crowd.

Ben Marsden tweeted a picture of one gurn before adding: "Best member of the Question Time audience, EVER."

Fellow viewer Lindsay Millar asked: "What's with this guys expression on Question Time #bbcqt #crazyeyes," while Steven Moore said: "The British public's take on politics summed up by a snap shot of the #bbcqt audience. Perplexed & indifferent."

Neil, a sound engineer, said he was a regular viewer of the show but did not have a particular political persuasion.

He added he stopped pulling the face during the show's more serious segments, when topics such as sexual assaults were discussed.

Last night's episode from the Ricoh is available to watch on BBC iPlayer - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... 9_05_2013/
