Broadgate was transported back to medieval times today as part of Coventry’s St George’s Day festivities.

Patriots were out in force to celebrate old England with Morris Men, loot music and a fire-breathing Dragon all part of the show.

And Coventrians at the event called for St George’s Day to be made a Bank Holiday as distinctly un-English sunshine bathed the city centre.

"We could do a lot more for St George’s Day," said ex-paratrooper Don Rowlson, 69, of Dillam Close, Longford.

"I think of myself as English first, then British second. Englishness to me is about a sense of fair play.

"We don’t celebrate today enough because the English are more reserved. We should push the boat out more like the Irish, Scots and the Welsh. It should be a Bank Holiday."

Up to 200 people gathered to watch three shows by Sir Aurelious Jones and the Dragon - the theatrical story of a medieval explorer displaying his exotic animals.

Coventry Morris Men brought a dash of colour and tradition to the city’s main public square in between performances of lute and bagpipe music spanning a 800-year period under the Lady Godiva statue.

Medieval characters in costume were also on hand for pictures.

The St George’s Day festivities from 11am to 3pm took place in Broadgate for the second year since a £7million refurb to improve key parts of the city centre.
