A peak audience of 9.27 million (34.64% share) tuned in to find out who killed Danny Latimer. The show averaged 8.72 million (33.52%) between 9pm and 10.05pm, including +1 figures.

It was revealed at the end of last night's episode that the detective series would be returning for a second run, surprising fans at the end credits with the words "Broadchurch will return".

Writer Chris Chibnall said: "The whole Broadchurch team has been delighted and properly gobsmacked by the response from ITV viewers.

"When I first talked to Peter Fincham and Laura Mackie, ITV's Director of Drama, about Broadchurch, I mentioned that if people liked it, there was another very different story we could tell afterwards. I'm really thrilled we're going to tell that story too."

David Tennant and Olivia Colman starred as DI Hardy and DS Miller in the hit crime series. It has not been confirmed whether the duo will be involved in the second run.

ITV said that details on the casting and story for series two would be "kept tightly under wraps". Production will start in 2014.
