Switzerland-based firm looks at buying Coventry Airport

A Switzerland-based firm is considering taking over Coventry Airport.


The city council said business support firm ADP had requested 30 days to look through the airport's books.

The Baginton site shut at the beginning of December. Passenger flights stopped in 2008, but the airport had continued handling freight.

The council's deputy leader Kevin Foster said the council had been talking to ADP since before Christmas and he was pleased by the moved.

"We are very confident that this is something that will go forward and will not be 30 days wasted, but will be 30 days that brings an end to the issue," he said.

Swiss company's ideas for Coventry Airport:

The chief executive of a Switzerland-based firm has been outlining what his company would use Coventry Airport for if it took over the site.

It was announced on Tuesday business support firm ADP had requested 30 days to look through the airport's books.

ADP chief executive Thomas Frankl said the airport site had "nice facilities" and a "great workforce potential".

He said the firm would look at expanding the existing cargo business and running some passenger flights.

Private jets

The airport at Baginton shut at the beginning of December.

Passenger flights stopped there in 2008, but the airport continued handling freight until it closed.

Mr Frankl said if ADP bought out the airport he also hoped to attract the owners of private jets to base their aircraft there.

He said: "It has got a very good infrastructure here already, which is quite unusual for a small regional airport."

He added: "Once the economy is better we would be looking at some specialist passenger traffic routes."
