It may be the worst year in her memory but I can remember one year in the late 1970s when there wasn't a single Xmas special on any TV channel!

Also what was she expecting? EastEnders and Coronation Street have always had a depressing storyline at Xmas. Dr Who is always a watered-down kiddie fantasy at this time of year. I wasn't disappointed myself because I wasn't expecting very much to begin with.

If the viewing figures were down it was because audiences had already shrunk in the months before Xmas, plus, there are many more ways of accessing shows than there used to be. Fewer people now live in big families and thus forced to watch the same festive programmes at the same time.

The BBC has traditionally saved its big new dramas for the New Year. Sadly, this New Year will be bereft of either a Sherlock or a Jonathan Creek mystery
