Two people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 31-year-old man was found dead in the front garden of an empty property in Coventry.

West Midlands Police have identified the man as Adebayo Adeniran, a Nigerian national, known locally as Patrick.

Police said Mr Adeniran , who was found in North Avenue, Stoke, on Thursday, died from multiple stab wounds.

A 31-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were being questioned, police said.

The landlord of the property, which is being renovated, discovered Mr Adeniran's body on Thursday morning.

Witness appeal

It is believed he was last seen alive at about 19:00 BST on Wednesday.

Det Ch Insp Matt Markham said: "Our thoughts are with Mr Adeniran's family at this difficult time and I want to hear from anyone who knows anything about what happened.

"We suspect the victim may have been in the company of other people and I would ask anyone who was in the area to cast their minds back."

He added that police want to hear from anyone who was in the Walsgrave Road, Binley Road or Far Gosford Street areas of the city between 18:00 BST and 22:00 BST on Wednesday.

Mr Markham described Mr Adeniran as black, about 5ft 9in tall, with short black hair. He was wearing a pink shirt underneath a blue jumper, jeans and a carrying rucksack.

Father admits brutal murder of Coventry University student

A DAD-OF-FIVE is facing life in prison after brutally stabbing a Coventry University student to death.

At Birmingham Crown Court, Brian Albrighton, 31, of Walsgrave Road, Stoke, pleaded guilty to murdering Adebayo Adeniran, also aged 31, in Stoke Park during June.

Sentencing was adjourned until Friday, November 9, for an assessment of Albrighton’s mental health and for the victim’s family to make statements about how his death has affected them.

Peter Cooper, defending, said Albrighton was on the medical wing at Hewell Prison in Redditch because although there were no concerns over his fitness to plead, he had occasionally “shown signs of psychosis”.

Remanding Albrighton into custody, Judge William Davis QC told him: “As you are fully aware the offence you have pleaded guilty to carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment.

“The sentencing judge has to determine the minimum you will have to serve.”

The court heard the starting point would be 25 years, minus any credit for the guilty plea and other legal considerations.

Mr Adeniran – known as Patrick – had been enjoying a night out at The Oak pub, in Gosford Street, on Wednesday, June 6, and was last seen alive in Walsgrave Road at about 7pm.

His body was found in the front garden of a vacant property in North Avenue the following morning.

A post-mortem revealed he died of stab wounds.

Mr Adeniran was a town planner at Ogun State Water Corporation in Nigeria and was studying at Coventry University for a master of science degree in oil and gas.

He was a member of the Coventry University Catholic Society and on his Facebook page described himself as “smooth and reserved”.

Father Jimmy Lutwama, the university chaplain and priest at St Mary and St Benedict’s Church, in Raglan Street, Hillfields, said: “He used to come here to Sunday mass. He was such a nice, calm, young man.”

West Midlands Police said two women aged 31 and 27 arrested in connection with the incident remain on police bail.

Brian Albrighton jailed for Adebayo Adeniran murder

A man who police called a "wicked fantasist" has been jailed for life for stabbing to death a student in an empty house in Coventry.

Brian Albrighton, 31, of Walsgrave Road, Coventry, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to murdering Nigerian student Adebayo Adeniran, 32, in June.

Officers who worked on the case said Albrighton had fantasised about what it would feel like to stab someone.

At Birmingham Crown Court, he was told he would serve a minimum of 22 years.

Mr Adeniran, who was known as Patrick, had been studying for a masters degree in oil and gas management at Coventry University.

Angela Millington, from the West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service, said both men had originally met in a pub that evening.

However, Mr Adeniran had become friendly with Albrighton's girlfriend, which led him to attack the student outside an empty house in which the couple had said Mr Adeniran could stay that night.

She said father-of-five Albrighton stabbed his victim four times, one wound piercing the student's heart.

'Outrageous knife killings'

Det Con Harry May, of West Midlands Police, said it was "one of the most wicked, senseless murder cases" he had experienced.

He said Albrighton had fantasised about what it would feel like to kill someone with a knife and researched stabbings on the internet, watching "outrageous" knife killings.

Mr May added: "[He] ultimately carried out his fantasy on an innocent man he stumbled across on a night out."

Jailing Albrighton, Judge William Davis QC said Mr Adeniran was the "eldest son of proud parents back in Nigeria", whose "grief cannot be properly expressed in words".

Two women, aged 27 and 31, who were also arrested in connection with the murder have since been released from police bail without charge.
