All night cafe and takeway planned for Hillfields

Plans have been submitted to open a new cafe and takeaway in Hillfields, Coventry, to sell food and drink all night.

An application has been received by Coventry City Council for Firduos Restaurant in Primrose Hill Street, Hillfields.

Advertised as a cafe in the plans, applicant Serbaz Ali is asking for permission to stay open to sell food and drink between 11pm and 5am, seven days a week.

In the application it states the outlet would be open from 9am.

A resident in Sundew Street, Wood End, who has objected to the licence said another takeaway on the street would cause excessive noise late at night and could see damage and destruction to other shops nearby as people wait for their food.

In a letter to the council’s licensing department they wrote: “I have witnessed first hand the problems this takeaway may create in the area due to the volume of young students arriving and leaving the Kasbah nightclub in to the early hours.

“This restaurant/takeaway would no doubt in my mind prolong the time club goers hang around unnecessarily in the area.

The anonymous resident also expressed concern about Kasbah security having to control a wider area and deal with revellers hanging around outside the takeaway.

They added: “All the above could be potentially more problems for the police in controlling the area.

“There are already adequate hot and cold food facilities available in the area which have been trading for many years without any problems.”

Local police officers had also initially objected to the application but following a meeting with Mr Ali he agreed to install cctv cameras on the premises and they were satisfied with his plans.

PC Jo Bowes from the Coventry licensing team, said: “I have spoken to Mr Ali and he has had his cctv cameras fitted. I have not physically checked the cameras but Mr Ali assures me they are up and working. Due to this police withdrew their objection.”

A decision will be made by members of the council’s licensing committee on Wednesday.

And of course the presence of TV cameras guarantees there will be no crime!
