Ryton car plant development plans submitted

Postby dutchman » Fri May 11, 2012 11:51 pm

Plans for a distribution centre which could create 300 jobs on a former car plant site near Coventry have been welcomed by the chamber of commerce.

Some 2,300 workers lost their jobs when Peugeot's Ryton works shut in 2007.

Rugby Borough Council is being asked to give outline planning permission for part of the 40 hectare (100 acre) site.

Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce said the possibility of 300 jobs coming to the region was "great news".

If it is given planning permission, Ryton Properties Ltd, which owns the site, wants to sell it on to a client which would then develop it.

'Brown field'

Chris Hall, from SJS Property Management, which is representing Ryton Properties Ltd, said that in the current market a distribution centre was the best use for the site.

"You could say that nothing should go on that site but manufacturing, but you'd be looking at a very large empty site for a very long time I'm afraid," he said.

Geoffrey Marsh, chair of Ryton Parish Council, said the village would welcome the site being redeveloped and jobs created.

"It's been lying there for five years as a brown field, which isn't a very inspiring thing to have on your doorstep."

New plans for Coventry's former Peugeot site at Ryton

Remaining land on the former Peugeot site at Ryton could be redeveloped after new plans were submitted.

New proposals sent to Coventry City Council show how the southern part of the site could be used.

An outline planning application has been made to the council by Rugby Borough Council for general industry, warehouse, storage and distribution uses to take up the space to the south of the former plant.

In a proposal outlined by Prologis UK LTD who intend to use the site, they have said it will be for industrial and distribution uses.
