I can wholeheartedly recommend "Hitler's Bastard" by Eric Pleasants.

Eric Pleasants was the son of a Norfolk gamekeeper. He was also a pacifist. So he joined the Peace Pledge Union, and was sent by them to work for a Jersey farmer in...May 1940. After the Germans occupied Jersey, he and some other young bloods went a-robbing, and sold the proceeds on the black market - until they got caught, and he was jailed in France. He escaped, and ended up ....back in Jersey. Got arrested again, and sent to a prison camp in Germany. While in the camp, he was approached by a recruiter for the British Freikorps (aka Hitler's bastard) which he joined, with a friend also arrested and imprisoned with him, from Jersey. He met and married a German woman who was in the SS. After the fall of Berlin, they joined a travelling circus - he was a strong man - but caused jealousy in another member of the circus, who shopped them to the Russians. Pleasants found himself in a Russian gulag, cutting and shovelling coal North of the Arctic Circle. after a number of escapades, he was taunted and challenged by a large Russian, whom he hit so hard that the Russian died. (Pleasants got an extra 5 years for that, totalling 30) and then was approached by the Russian mafia to join them, which he did. After Khrushchev gained power, his mother got the Foreign Office to negotiate his release, and he got back to Norfolk after 16 years away from home. However, he never saw his German wife again, and ultimately married a local girl. He died aged 87, as determined and resourceful to the very end.

A remarkable story, I've never read anything like it. Well written, often amusing, at times sad, but always riveting. If you can get a copy, do so - I guarantee you'll be absolutely rapt!
