More part-time firefighters are needed in Warwickshire, according to the county council.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue said it had a shortage of staff at seven of its 19 stations, 12 of which are crewed solely by retained firefighters.

It said crews were particularly needed in the south of the county.

As well as being fit, part-time firefighters need to live or work within five minutes of a station and be available at short notice.

Further afield

The council said it had suffered from a high turnover of staff, partly due to the economic situation.

It said a number of existing staff based near rural stations had been forced to travel further afield to find work.

The fire service said retained staff were typically called out two or three times a week, for a few hours, as well as attending drill and training sessions.

It said retained crews were needed in Kenilworth, Fenny Compton, Bidford, Wellesbourne, Shipston, Stratford upon Avon and Henley.
