The former Brookside star, who was skating alongside partner Daniel Whiston to Peggy Lee's 'Fever', performed a 'scorpion kick' manoeuvre which saw her graze her scalp with the blade of her boot.

Ellison went on to complete the routine, for which she and Whiston scored 19 points, their highest tally during the competition so far.

Whiston later explained to host Christine Bleakley: "She's in great hands, she's getting patched up. The good news is she's going to be okay. It was a very scary moment.. when I looked down, her whole hair was just red.

"Everybody cares about her very much, including me. She is a trooper... she wanted to finish that routine and I thought it was her best skate."

Coach Karen Barber added: "It's that moment that emphasises how dangerous ice skating is. The blades are so sharp and the adrenaline tonight went a little bit further."

The show's host Phillip Schofield later provided Twitter followers with an update on Ellison's progress.

"Current news on Jen is that she's ok but in mild shock and feeling a bit sick," he wrote. "It's apparently not a serious injury though, thankfully!"

Dancing on Ice continues on ITV1.

Jennifer Ellison thanks fans after 'Dancing on Ice' head injury

Jennifer Ellison has revealed that she is feeling "absolutely fine" after her Dancing on Ice Scorpion Kick accident.

Ellison was left with a bloody head after her performance on the ITV1 show went wrong and she accidently struck her own head with a skate blade.

The 28-year-old former Brookside actress was emotional as she was taken away for medical treatment, but has posted a message on the show's official site insisting that she is "absolutely fine".

"This is a message to everyone who has been in touch to see if I'm ok. I'm absolutely fine and I've been glued together," she said.

"I've got a bit of a headache and I'll probably feel even worse in the morning, but thanks for all the support, it means so much to me. Hopefully I won't have to do the routine again."

Her pro partner Daniel Whiston spoke about how the incident occured, commenting: "At the end of the routine Jen does a scorpion kick. She threw her leg really high and the heel of her skate has gone into the back of her head.

"Her whole hair was just red because obviously the heart's pumping and a lot of blood's come out. But she's in great hands now."
