Warwickshire church receives £90,000 grant

A Warwickshire village church has been awarded more than £90,000 to complete urgent repairs.



The money will be used to carry out "high-level" structural work at St Edith's Church in Monks Kirby.

Work at the 11th Century church was expected to start in April, the Reverend Robert Ireton said.

The grant is a joint award by the Church Buildings Council and the Wolfson Foundation to ensure the church remains accessible.

Mr Ireton said: "We've got long-term plans to make it more user-friendly, put in adequate toilet facilities and adequate kitchen facilities.

"Unfortunately most of the funding has to go on keeping it watertight."

The church serves a population of about 400 in the parish of Monks Kirby.

Fundraising joy for Monks Kirby’s historic church



The Grade I-listed St Edith’s Church in Monks Kirby will be in fine shape for its Patronal Festival in July.

This year’s event on July 15 and 16 will mark the 940th anniversary of St Edith’s and will see the opening of toilet facilities, a new kitchen and a multi-purpose room.

Work can now get under way after a grant of £48,974.61 from funding body Wren saw it reach its fundraising target.

Parochial Church Council member and lead fundraiser Patricia Barnett said: “We are delighted to receive this financial support, as it means we can now proceed with these improvements.

“By taking forward these modernisation works, we hope to encourage more people to engage with the church and access its unique heritage during this important anniversary year.”

Wren’s grant manager for Warwickshire, Joe Newby, says: “We’re delighted to be supporting the modernisation project at St Edith’s Church and pleased our funding will significantly help improve this valuable community space.”

Wren is a not-for-profit business that awards grants from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.

The fundraising had previously been boosted by grants of £10,000 from the National Churches Trust and another £10,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation.
