The ceremony, which was held in London's O2 Arena, saw Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan taking home both of the 'Drama Performance' gongs.

However, the show lost out to Downton Abbey for the prize of 'Best Drama'.

Elsewhere, Coronation Street won the prized 'Serial Drama' gong, while Katherine Kelly - who left the soap this week - took home the 'Serial Drama Performance' gong.

EastEnders did win a prize for 'Best Newcomer', which was taken home by Jacqueline Jossa.

Meanwhile, The X Factor won the 'Best Talent' honour, in a tough category which also featured Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing on Ice and Britain's Got Talent. The show's latest winners Little Mix performed 'Don't Let Go' during the ceremony.

However, host Dermot O'Leary lost out to Ant & Dec, who won the 'Best Entertainment Presenter' award for the 11th time.

In the comedy categories, Outnumbered beat Benidorm and Miranda to win 'Best Sitcom', while the 'Panel Show' honour went to Celebrity Juice.

Celebrity Juice star Holly Willoughby also won a gong for This Morning, which beat An Idiot Abroad, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and Top Gear in the 'Best Factual' category.

Special awards went to David Walliams, who took home the 'Landmark' prize, and Gary Barlow, who won 'Outstanding Contribution'. Jonathan Ross was handed the 'Special Recognition' award.
