Rare horsefly named after Beyoncé

A rare horsefly found in northern Australia has been named after Beyoncé.



Researchers were apparently inspired to name the Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae after the singer because of its prominent golden behind.

"It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly's abdomen that led me to name this fly in honour of the performer Beyoncé, as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy - the naming of species," Bryan Lessard from Australia's science agency CSIRO told Metro.

He added that the fly's golden posterior makes it the "all-time diva of flies".

Queensland farmers apparently consider the fly a pest, despite it pollinating many plants.

The CSIRO contacted Beyoncé for a comment, but is yet to hear back.
