Military Wives on course for Christmas number one

The Military Wives and Gareth Malone are on course for this year's Christmas number one, outselling their nearest competitor by a hundred to one.



Pre-orders for the choir's charity single 'Wherever You Are' meant that it stormed to the top of the Amazon and iTunes download charts on Sunday, making them favourites to win the race this week.

Amazon reports that sales of the track are likely to remain 100 times higher than its nearest competitors throughout the week, including Little Mix's X Factor winner's single 'Cannonball' and Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', which has seen a rise in sales due to a Facebook campaign.

Amazon's music and MP3 manager Roger Greensmith said: "Military Wives have been smashing records throughout the pre-order period and now that the single has released they are continuing to perform well making this year's Christmas number one a foregone conclusion.

"'Wherever You Are' has no real competition for the race to top the charts on Christmas Day and the single is now one of the top twenty bestselling music products of all-time at Amazon.co.uk, a tremendous achievement for a single."

The choir, which is made up of 100 wives and girlfriends of army members who served in Afghanistan, recently performed the the song for the Prime Minister outside 10 Downing Street, as well as playing at the Royal Albert Hall last month.
