David Veall, 28, from Coventry Street in the Stoke area of the city, was given a life sentence for stabbing Warren Lenagh, also of Coventry Street.

Mr Lenagh, 35, died in hospital from his wounds sustained during a row with Veall on 25 June 2010.

Veall was found guilty by a majority verdict at Warwickshire Justice Centre in Leamington on Thursday.

Speaking after sentencing, Det Insp Simon Astle, from West Midlands Police, said: "This has been a difficult and traumatic time for Warren's friends and family and I hope today's result goes some way to helping them move forward with their lives.

"The sentence sends a message to anyone carrying a knife, or is prepared to use a bladed weapon, that their actions will not be tolerated in the West Midlands.

"I hope that this case helps people to stop and think about the tragic consequences that carrying a knife can have.

"No sentence can change the events of last year but I hope that it offers some comfort to Warren's many friends and his family."
