The on-the-night figure is £8m more than 2010 and is expected to rise as more donations are sent in.

Host Sir Terry Wogan announced the news at the end of the telethon, saying: "That is the greatest single total we have ever made in one night, so thank you.

"Thank you to the British people in these tough times to come up with that kind of money on behalf of Britain's children."

BBC Radio 2 listeners donated a record £2,032,642, beating last year's total of £1,693,444, according to the BBC.

One Show host Matt Baker raised over £1.2m for Children in Need with his Rickshaw Challenge, completing a 480-mile journey from Edinburgh Castle to BBC Television Centre.

"To actually see people running after you with money and wanting you to have it, it's just unbelievable," he said.

One Direction, Susan Boyle and Westlife all performed on the show, which was presented by Sir Terry Wogan, Tess Daly, Fearne Cotton and Alesha Dixon.

The cast of The Wizard of Oz also appeared and revealed they had raised more than £10,000 for Children in Need.

The money raised will help support children's charities across the country.

This is always worth donating for as you know the money lands up where it is supposed to go ;)
