The long-awaited record from Chris Martin's band raced to pole position after shifting 208,000 copies, more than the rest of the top five combined.

Mylo Xyloto's phenomenal sales total is the second biggest debut of 2011 so far after Lady GaGa's Born This Way, which posted first-week numbers of 215,000 back in May.

Previous chart champion Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds now slips down to the runner-up spot ahead of Michael Bublé's Christmas album at three, Doo Wops & Hooligans by Bruno Mars, which climbs to four from last week's nine, and Kelly Clarkson's new album Stronger at five.

X Factor champion Matt Cardle's debut album Letters slips from two to six in its second week on the chart, Adele's 21 drops out of the top five for the first time in 40 weeks of release at eight and former number one The Ultimate Collection by Steps trips six to nine.

New entries in the shape of Bad As Me by Tom Waits and Message To You by Army trio The Soldiers fill spots ten and 11, while 12th place this week goes to James Morrison and The Awakening, which is down six.

Example boosts seven up the chart to 16 with Playing In The Shadows, as Daniel O'Donnell and Katy Perry drop out of the best-sellers by falling ten together to 17 and 18 with The Ultimate Collection and Teenage Dream.

Kasabian's Velociraptor! completes the top 20 after falling six from 14, Caro Emerald re-enters the chart at 21 with Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor and Britain's Got Talent runner-up Ronan Parke makes an underwhelming arrival with his self-titled debut at 22.
