Just picked up that TJ HUGHES appointed administrator
The way things are going, there will be NO shops on the High Street
ADMINISTRATORS have found a buyer for four TJ Hughes stores in a deal which will save more than 400 jobs.
Ernst & Young say an agreement has been made with Lewis’s Home Retail Limited to buy four stores, including sites in Liverpool,, Glasgow and Sheffield.
The future still remains uncertain for workers at Coventry’s Lower Precinct store and staff at Nuneaton’s Queen’s Road site – which opened in November last year, creating 113 jobs.
Joint administrator Tom Jack said: “We are delighted to have exchanged contracts on this deal, which saves 442 jobs and continues the TJ Hughes legacy in Liverpool, as well as other locations across the UK.”
ALMOST 50 jobs have been lost at Nuneaton’s TJ Hughes store after administrators failed to find a buyer.
The Queen’s Road shop is one of 22 stores due to close next week after the collapsed retailer went into administration in June.
It was announced yesterday a total of 1,061 employees across the country are being made redundant – including 45 workers in Nuneaton.
The news comes just ten months after the discount department chain opened at the old Woolworth’s site, after investing £2.8million in the town centre shop.
The future of Coventry’s TJ Hughes, which is based in the city’s Lower Precinct, is still unknown.
Tom Jack, joint administrator, said: “It is regrettable that we have had to schedule these stores closures and we are extremely grateful to the employees and management at all the group’s stores, at the head office and at warehouses for their loyalty and support during what has been a very difficult and uncertain time.
“We continue in negotiations with a number of interest parties for a large number of the remaining stores in the group’s portfolio, and we are keen to stress that those stores unaffected by these closures will continue to trade for the time being, with new stock lines being added.”
Administrators say all employees in Nuneaton are being offered support and advice throughout the redundancy process.
The last day of trading at the town centre store will be Sunday, August 14.
A closing down sale will start immediately.
More than 50 jobs are to go with the closure of Coventry discount store TJ Hughes this weekend.
Staff were “very upset” after being told the devastating news on Tuesday, although it was not made public until yesterday.
The big budget retailer went into administration in June and 31 UK stores have already closed, including Nuneaton.
TJ Hughes administrators Ernst & Young said in a statement yesterday that Coventry’s Lower Precinct store would close this Sunday with the loss of 55 jobs.
Managers there declined to comment, but a notice on one of the tills said ‘please, please don’t ask us when we are closing as it makes us very upset’.
The store was decked out with colourful closing down signs and many rails and shelves were already empty as shoppers grabbed last minute bargains, with many items up to 60 per cent off.
One woman shopper, who bought a £7.50 jacket for £4, said: “It’s a shame because it’s great for cheap children’s clothes.”
Another said: “It’s sad because there is nothing else like it in Coventry.”
The statement from Ernst & Young said Coventry was one of a further 12 stores to shut from August 21.
It continued: “Closing down sales will commence immediately at all of these stores, with significant discounts on normal retail prices.
“Employees affected by these closures are being offered appropriate support and advice throughout the redundancy process and Jobcentre Plus representatives are providing support to help find future employment.
Joint administrator Tom Jack said: “A purchaser for these stores was not found, and regrettably we have had to schedule the store closures.
“We are extremely grateful to the employees and management at all the group’s stores for their loyalty and support during this very difficult time.
“We are keen to stress that those stores unaffected by these closures will continue to trade for the time being.”
The closure of the Nuneaton store in Queens Road came just ten months after the firm invested £2.8 million in the former Woolworths site.
TJ Hughes to reopen at its old site in Coventry's Lower Precinct
Shops in Coventry city centre has been given a big boost with the two new stores poised to open their doors.
TJ Hughes is to return to its former flagship store in Lower Precinct - and jeweller F Hinds will be a new addition to the indoor mall.
Discount store TJ Hughes closed down in 2011 but the chain will now re-open on its old site.
Property adviser BNP Paribas secured the deals alongside its joint agent Wright Silverwood.
They also announced that The Entertainer, Lush and Trespass have all extended their leases, guaranteeing they will stay in the Lower Precinct for the time being.
