A bunch of footie fanatics from a Coventry college have scored a world record for the longest continual football match – an epic 72 hours.

The students, from Nexus Music College in Albany Road, Earlsdon, smashed the efforts of the reigning champions – students from Loughborough University – who had set the bar at 60 hours.

The event was held on Hinckley United Football Club’s pitch.

Tim Gordon, drum tutor at the college, said it felt “unbelievable” to have achieved the record, which was set up as part of the annual rag week, raising cash for the college.

He said: “The students started off with willpower but as the time went on it got much harder – everyone was struggling, it was cold and dark, the players were aching and just wanted to go home and not be stuck on a football pitch.

“But we stayed strong as a team, there was a real sense of community as we all wanted to raise as much money as possible for Nexus.”

The students kicked off the mammoth challenge at 10am on Saturday June 18, eventually reaching their goal – slightly worse for wear – on Tuesday June 21.

The event was just one of the epic events the college held during the rag week.

Tim said: “We’ve had a cycle-powered busking team with six cyclists powering generators for a band’s performance, a ‘vocal revolution’ where we taught 1,000 people to sing in one week, and the students also produced a movie, along with soundtrack, in a week. We certainly don’t do things by halves!”
