The go-ahead has been given for a new £50 million shopping and gym complex in Coventry city centre.
Planners have approved developer Barberry’s ideas for a supermarket, a health club and a big car park on the former Royal Mail site at Bishops Street.
The complex would be named Bishop Gate and will have to comply with a set of conditions, including a £75,000 donation to improve the tow path along the nearby Coventry canal.
The Canal Basin bridge over the ringroad will also be replaced with a pedestrian crossing link.
It’s thought the scheme could create 500 jobs.
Henry Bellfield, director of Barberry Developments, said:
“Following the closure of the Royal Mail Sorting Office this part of the city centre is in desperate need of new investment and redevelopment.”
“The plans we are currently working on are hugely exciting and will create hundreds of jobs for local people.
