The blue and red kit, complete with a storm trooper style helmet, replaces the old orange ones and bosses reckon it’ll give their staff better protection.

Vij Randeniya is the Chief Fire Officer:

“What we’re trying to do is provide protection, so beneath the visor are special safety goggles, which are inbuilt into the helmet system itself and then the visor, which drops down is to stop solar glare.

But he’s not sure about the comparison the new kit has got to a power rangers outfit:

“We are super heroes, we’re there doing a fantastic job. People love us and we do a fantastic job. It’s an interesting analogy, the Power Rangers, but I do accept the point that it does look pretty 21st century and that’s exactly where we are.”

The service say their contract with their previous kit suppliers ran out, so they were able to get a better deal with a new one.

They claim it will save them £1.4 million over the next 8 years.
