A new report has found more than 1 in 4 children in Coventry are living in poverty.
The north-east of the city fared worst in the Child Poverty Action Group research, which showed 34% of youngsters were going without basics such as school uniform and a properly-heated home.
That compares to 19% in Nuneaton and Bedworth, the most deprived part of Warwickshire, and 12% in Warwick.
Across the West Midlands, Birmingham had more children in poverty than any other part of the region – with three parts of the city polling in the worst 20 areas nationally.
Alison Garnham, Chief Executive of the Child Poverty Action Group, said: “I think in this time when we’re in a recession and people are facing benefit cuts, it’s precisely the time to address child poverty.”
“If we don’t, we face seeing it rise considerably.”
“The government next week in its Budget has an opportunity to do something to improve things for these families, so they can get jobs and raise their children properly.”
