It’s been confirmed that doctors who treat children at Coventry’s University Hospital will soon be training up colleagues down the road at the George Eliot in Nuneaton.

NHS bosses in Nuneaton say because they use a lot of junior doctors at the moment, they could benefit from having more experienced medics on site to show them different ways of doing things.

While there won’t be a reduction in the number of workers, sharing staff across the two hospitals is expected to bring an as-yet unspecified cost saving.

Chris Bradshaw, George Eliot’s Acting Chief Executive said: “This collaborative approach to working will ensure George Eliot’s staff and trainees are able to maximise their skills and range of experience to benefit patient care.”

Staff at University Hospital took over the leadership of nurses and doctors at George Eliot’s paediatric unit last November and from 1st April all management will transfer to Coventry.

There is expected to be a public consultation in the future into a wider reform of children’s services across Coventry and Warwickshire, which will look at providing safe and effective care for youngsters in various locations.

Nuneaton MP Marcus Jones wants an urgent meeting with bosses over the move: “We are led to believe that there will be no immediate changes to George Eliot at the moment.”

“But both Dan Byles (the MP for North Warwickshire) and I do have concerns about the future of these important services the provision of which must be balanced against making sure that we have the highest possible level of patient safety.”

“We will be closely monitoring the situation as it develops and look forward to meeting with senior executives as paediatric services is an extremely important area of clinical need in Nuneaton.”
