Della and Bink Spicer say dangerous dogs are out of control on the streets of their neighbourhood after their seven-year-old dog Leo was viciously attacked.

He spent four days at the vets and had to undergo life-saving surgery after skin on his throat was ripped off and he suffered deep bite wounds to his face and neck.

And Della, of Avocet Close, Aldermans Green was taken to hospital suffering from shock after the 15 minute ordeal in neighbouring Aldermans Green Road.

The couple are now calling for owners to take more responsibility for their pets.

Yesterday, the Government was urged to speed up changes to the Dangerous Dogs Act after a 75-year-old man from Liverpool was mauled while trying to save a schoolboy from a bull terrier.

In the Aldermans Green incident Della, 71, had been walking Leo and five-year-old Jack Russell, Lester, when two dogs – a pit bull and a Staffordshire bull terrier – bolted out from a nearby garden.

“The pit bull came out and grabbed hold of Leo and a Staffordshire bull terrier got hold of Lester,” Della said.

“A neighbour came out and kicked the Staffy off Lester but the pit bull had hold of Leo round the throat on the lawn.”
