A long blue line leading visitors from Coventry railway station to the city centre has worn out just four months after it was painted.
The sky blue line was introduced in October in a bid to make the city more accessible to visitors, leading them through two subways and under an overpass to the Bull Yard where the line ends at a signpost.
But despite the council contracting a specialist line painter rather than using their own line painting team based at its Whitley depot, the job, which would be expected to last five years, already needs to be redone.
However, Pete Ullah, Coventry’s interim highways operations manager, insists the new blue line will come at no cost to taxpayers.
He said: “We’ve had some issues with some of the original workmanship by the contractor.
“One of our inspectors on a routine round noticed some of it had started to come off.”
Mr Ullah said the line is likely to have been worn down by the cold and snowy winter, and problems were probably caused when the line was first painted.
He added: “We wanted a clear line coming through and we didn’t have the necessary laser equipment at the time so we used a sub contractor which we occasionally do for specialist lining work.
“When we spoke to the contractor he felt some of the problem may have been down to the cold weather.
“It was a problem with the application, which is why he has agreed to rectify it at his own cost.”
Mr Ullah said the total cost of the blue line project was around £650.
