Ray Burke and other members of staff were inside The Newlands pub in Tile Hill Lane, when the robbery happened in the early hours of Sunday.

Staff were cashing up while others were in the seating area of the pub when they heard a loud smash.

Two men – both of whom were wearing balaclavas – had used a plant pot to smash a window at the back of the pub to get inside.

Once inside the men, who were armed with a crowbar, demanded cash.

Police say the landlord challenged the pair of would-be thieves who then threw a crowbar at him, which struck him on the back of his head.

The pair then fled the pub empty-handed.

The landlord was left with a gash on his head which needed stitches.

No-one else was injured.
