More than 100 volunteers turned out to mark the closure of a recycling warehouse.

Since it opened five years ago, The Recycle Warehouse at Leamington’s Princes Drive tip has diverted 600,000 tonnes of rubbish from landfill with the help of 350 different volunteers.

But local green charity Action 21 is leaving the site as Warwickshire County Council has awarded its contract to the Sue Ryder Care charity.

Rick Smith, Action 21 manager, said: “It’s sad for our volunteers and staff, but it’s great to look back at what we’ve achieved – and look to plans for the future.

“Different volunteers told stories about how working here helped to get them a job or how it had helped to bring them out of a dark time in their life.

“It really pulled on the heart strings and showed what a difference the place has made.”

Action 21 will be leaving the Princes Drive warehouse this weekend, moving all bikes, furniture and household goods to their newer canalside Re-use Centre in Ramsey Road, Sydenham.
