A man, a woman and four more children – including a baby girl in a pram – escaped unhurt.

They had been alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the injured boy was taken to Warwick Hospital.

Ben Harrison, watch manager at Leamington fire station, said the cause of the fire – which started in an upstairs bedroom at 9.15pm on Tuesday – was under investigation.

Two fire engines from Leamington arrived in under three minutes to find the first floor of the 1950s semi “well alight”.

Flames and smoke were pouring through a broken window and up a chimney.

Mr Harrison said although the fire was confined to the bedroom, the heat was so intense it melted the shower curtain in the bathroom further down the landing.

All the other upstairs rooms also suffered smoke and heat damage.
